This is why historical record statements need two separate checks:

  1. Is the player’s total fixed? A retired player’s final aggregate does not change.
  2. Is the player’s position fixed? Not necessarily. Active players can move above a retired player and alter the order.

The practical editorial rule is straightforward: treat retired-player totals as fixed, but check the source date or completed-match cutoff before publishing any active player’s total, supporting statistics or gap to the record. If no cutoff is available, the figure should be identified as source-reported and undated rather than presented as live.
