RANKINGS
ABOUT OUR TEST RANKINGS
Test Match Stats Rankings have been developed to rank players over their test careers and weighted on the basis of current form and personal contribution to team performance.

Batting points

Batting points are scored on a per innings basis. All players can score Batting Points, calculated on the following basis:

  • 0.5 * total runs scored
  • +10 points if runs scored is between 50 and 99
  • +25 points for 100 or more runs

In addition, each player is assigned a number of Contribution Points, calculated as:

  • total runs scored * (total runs scored by player / total runs scored by player's team in same innings)

Low score penalties will be deducted from the player's Batting Points as follows:

  • - 5 points for being out with runs scored
  • - 10 points for being out with no runs scored

The following count as NOT being out, and incur no penalty:

  • Absent Hurt
  • Absent Ill
  • Not Out
  • Retired Hurt
  • Retired Not Out

Bowling points

Points are awarded to each bowler on a per innings basis as follows:

  • 15 * total number of wickets taken
  • +25 points if wickets taken is greater than or equal to 5

In addition, each bowler is assigned a number of Contribution Points, calculated as:

  • 20 * (total wickets taken by player / total wickets taken by team)
  • Contribution Points are only scored if the total number of wickets taken by the team is greater than 5

Low score penalties will be deducted from the player's Bowling Points as follows:

  • - (runs conceded / 4)
  • - 10 points for taking no wickets

Missed match penalty

For each match missed since a player's last appearance (i.e. if a country team plays and a player for that country does not play in that match, or any subsequent match) a cumulative penalty of 10 points per match is deducted from each of the batting and bowling points awarded to the player.

The formula for the penalty for missing N matches is 10N(N+1)/2.

Time weighting

The points awarded per match are weighted by year on a moving cycle of 365 days.

The following weightings apply:

  • Year 1 (last 365 days) - 100%
  • Year 2 (366 - 730 days) - 50%
  • Year N 1/N * 100%

For example, if a match took match took place on 1/10/2001 then as of 1/10/2002 any points awarded to a player would be 50% of the points awarded to the player in that match.
